I magnet fished near a lock in Chester as a kid with my Dad and brother in 1979, not that one, but one with a road bridge nearby. borrowed a huge speaker magnet from my primary school teacher to recover a canal lock key that we had dropped of a boat we were on the week previously. Amongst the junk we found rod stands, several lock keys, an opened coin operated gas meter and, with the help of a grapple made from a found bike-frame, recovered a knackered Honda step-through "moped" with a huge eel that came out of the mud-gaurd once we had dragged it over the towpath and onto some grass, the Eel headed back for the canal and sent us all freaking out a bit - it was huge. Years later with a "ceramic sea searcher" i tried at the Christleton lock on the edge of chester, more rod stands and an immediately rideable racing bike that I donated to a hippy on a boat moored nearby. Cheers for reminding me of it.
